Zambian Religious Artwork
Can you guess which scene in the Bible this first Zambian painting is depicting? What about this next scene? (ANSWERS BELOW) These scenes are a fresh reminder about how differently people may see or hear a story. A person's culture plays a powerful role in understanding. How does your cultural background impact the way you understand the Bible?
ANSWER #1 That's right, this scene was taken from John 8:4-10! Let's read it:
"They said to him, 'Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?' This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, 'Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.' And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" (John 8:4-10)
ANSWER #2 Correct again, this scene was taken from Luke 22:14-17. "And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. And he said to them, 'I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.' And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, "Take this, and divide it among yourselves."
(Luke 22:14-17)
Pastor Resource Centers Update
One of the things we are excited about over here in Zambia is our Pastor Resource Centers (or PRC's). It has long been a vision of our Pastor Leadership director, Glenn Ripley, to have place where pastors could have a resource library, like commentaries and dictionaries to help with preparing their sermons and further their learning. But, as we have talked with pastors, we have learned that not only do the pastors not have money to buy important books to help their studying, they also don't have money to travel to a central location, which up to this point had been the vision. God began to help us as a team understand that if we are to truly help pastors and leaders, we need to go where they are. And that is what we have done. We have picked five strategically placed compounds throughout the city with reputable, faithful pastors and we have designated these areas as PRC's. The areas we have picked are Matero with Pastor Thole, Ng'ombe with Pastor Sakala, Chilenge with Pastor Kandela, Kanyama with Pastor Kaumba and Mutendere with Pastor Sitali. Each of these centers have been given over two hundred books that include commentaries, encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on leadership, doctrine, preaching and much more. All the books have been input into a library software so as to organize, track and categorize. These pastors have/will be given a notebook with all the paper they need to register pastors who want to borrow books, library cards and check out sheets. Every few months the books will be accounted for and then updated on the AZ computer. By putting a pastor in charge of the PRC's, we are not responsible to keep track of the books and we continue to further this passion of ours to equip the locals to do the ministry. The pictures above show our second PRC, Kanyama, where the books will be kept at Lusaka Theological College. We hope in the future to add computers for Logos Bible Software, listening stations for sermons and a perhaps a TV so they can watch preachers. Thank you for your prayers!
